Special Olympics Torch
Whitby RBC Branch Manager, and Canadian National Womens Hockey team member, and olympic gold medal winner, Gillian Apps light the RBC Torch from the Special Olympics Torch being held by Mark and Stephanie Barrett as it passed through Whitby, signifying the start of the RBC Special Olympics Torch Relay and Twoonies for Torches. The RBC Special Olympics Torch Relay will bring the torch to branches in Durham throughout the month of May to raise awareness of the upcoming Special Olympic Games. Branches will also begin selling paper torches for $2 which will be displayed in each branch as part of Twoonies for Torches. All proceeds collected in May will be given to Special Olympics Ontario.

EASTYORK/RIVERDALE - A monk performs a special ritual at Fu Yao Supermarket with Hou Chang Mao's children. Mao, 47, was stocking oranges at Fu Yao Supermarket on Gerrard Street East last Thursday evening when he was struck in the torso during an alleged gun battle between two or more men who fled the scene. During the ceremony, a piece of Mao’s clothing was brought to the scene of his passing to symbolize the reuniting of his body and soul.
Truck Fire on 35/115
ORONO - A tractor trailer which was parked on the shoulder of the north bound lanes on Hwy 35/115, had its load of scrap cars catch fire, closing the highway for well over an hour. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Home Invasion
WHITBY - A police officer opens a windows to let a man, woman and dog inside. Durham Region Police blocked off a portion of Brock St. North in Whitby, after receiving a call for an attempted armed home invasion around 5pm. A man, woman and dog, believed to be the residents of the townhouse fled to the ledge of the home waiting for SWAT to clear the unit. Luckily, they were unharmed in the incident and were led to safety by the officers. Police are looking for two suspects who are believed to be armed and dangerous. May 22, 2007

UXBRIDGE - A tow truck driver hooks up some cables to flip a car over, which landed in a ditch on Elgin Park Drive. An afternoon snowstorm caused for slippery driving conditions. Thankfully the driver of the car came out of the accident uninjured.

Enbridge representative tries to convince local area residents that the pipeline and power plant are safe, over map of proposed site.EAST YORK/RIVERDALE - Concerned local citizens came to the Matty Eckler Community Centre to voice their concerns at an open-house put on by Enbridge Gas Distribution Incorporated, regarding the plans by Enbridge to build a gas pipeline through lower Riverdale to supply the proposed Portland Power Plant with natural gas. Concerned parties argue that the power plant would emit 1.7 million tons of greenhouses gases into the atmosphere, causing severe respiratory problems to nearby citizens as well as to all Torontonians.
