CAHC - 2008 ARETE HONORS

In 2008, The Canadian National Amputee Hockey Team was recognised by CBS Sports Arete Honors for Courage in Sport. Past recognised athletes include the likes of Lance Armstrong, Muhammad Ali, and Tiger Woods to name a few. The yearly event honors athletes that have aspired to excellence and overcame unbelievable obstacles.

As with much of my work which hasn't been posted, I sometimes need a reminder to share my work with the public. The reminder came when I received an emailed link to the CAHC team portion of the 2008 Arete Honors program on YouTube a few days ago. I figured some of the photos I shot last year, when the program was being filmed might nicely accompany the posted video.

Next week I'm heading out to Montreal to cover the training camp. In April the 2010 ISIHF World Championships will also be taking place in Montreal where team Canada will try to win their 5th straight gold medal. I'll be there as well. I'll post more info on my blog once it becomes available with schedules and stuff for those that want to come and cheer on their favorite team.

The Canadian team is always looking for sponsors - especially corporate ones. If anyone out there in Canada (or worldwide for that matter) that has money and would like to help out a team that has won nothing but gold medals, and proudly represents a nation in the greatest sport of all time, please get in contact with Don, Tom, Allan or Anita ... at your earliest convenience of course!

In the meantime, sit back and relax, at least for the next 7 minutes, and watch a great video about a truly awesome hockey team. Who knows... you might even get inspired.

No Way Out - London

These photos were shot about a year ago while in London, England. Never posted these.. heck.. I havn't posted any pix from our big trip.... soon they will find a place on the intraweb... after all the wedding edits are done.

What I love about London (amongst other things), is how pedestrian friendly it is. The Tube is super efficient - little confusing at first, but the best way to get around.

Blog Updates Almost Complete?

Ok... so I've just spent the last 6 hours trying to update all my posts with the new larger size photos.... and I've run into a small roadblock.

Even though I'm a complete noob when it comes to coding I've managed to update/rejuvenate my old posts with photo previews at 640p. The blogger coding has changed quite a bit since 2006, and I somehow figured out how to adapt the code from Stephmodo's post (see previous post on Updating Blog) to the changes... Unfortunatly all of my posts prior to January 09, 2007 seem to have a significantly different coding to them which to the best of my limited coding knowledge won't allow me to change the size of my photos.

Below is the code from my very first post in 2006. If anyone knows how to make the preview photos bigger you will win my gratitude....and a gold star.

Irrigation Bee at Ben Nobleman Park

Susan Poizner waters a cherry tree while Deborah Anthony talks about the fruits starting to grow on its branches, at Ben Nobleman Park during a community irrigation bee. Stroller March

A few dozen parents and their children came to Toronto's City Hall to participate in a stroller march, to raise awareness about the childcare crisis in Toronto and to object the city’s proposed new by-laws that would prohibit new residential daycares. Over 15,500 children in Toronto are waiting for subsidized daycare, while even more are waiting for non-subsidized daycare.

Yoga Marathon at Perram House

Katherine Duncanson, was one of the instructors who gave a free Kundalini yoga lesson during the Yoga Marathon at Perram House, practicing meditation and breathing techniques. The Yoga Marathon took place to raise money for Perram House, a Palliative Care Hospice located in downtown Toronto.

Amanda Belzowski's Lemonade Stand

11 3/4-year-old Amanda Belzowski, with her 3 year old brother and family raised $22,118.36 with this years lemonade stand for the annual Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart. Amanda has been holding her Lemonade stand fundraiser for the past 11 years. Including this years tally, she has raised $124,118.36 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

15th annual Taylor Massey Creek Clean Up

Scarborough - 45 Oak trees and native shrubs were planted at this years clean up. One oak was planted by local resident Jerry Diplaros who lost his son in Afghanistan on Dec. 05/08. Volunteers also cleaned up the banks, water way and surround area of the creek from garbage. Harry Van Bommel started the cleanup 14 years ago with his wife Janet, because what he saw was a 'georgeous area that looked terrible'. When he started 14 years ago they were pulling out multiple shopping carts and large items from the creek area, now it's small items like bags with dog waste, bottles, wrappers, and other miscellaneous debris.

Re-Greetings and Salutations and a Happy New Year!

Hello strangers!
Just wanted to let everyone know we're finally back in Canada after traveling through Poland, England, India, and Nepal. We had a blast, we're tired, and we're trying to start the year off on a good foot. There will be changes coming in the next few months, which will include a new website (yay!). There will be photo exhibitions in the first and second half of the year. There will be photos going up from the trip as soon as the new TB's arrive and there is a book in the works with an estimated published date of sometime in the early fall.

I also wanted to thank everyone who has emailed me regarding wedding photography. If I haven't sent you a response yet, I will soon, as my email box is overflowing right now. In a few days, all messages will be answered.

Some answers to wedding photography questions...
1. Yes, my prices are probably more then what some previous clients have posted on certain wedding forums... but I bet you they're still pretty affordable.
2. No, I am not a full-time, 100%, die-hard wedding photographer... but I am interested in documenting your wedding day.... I shoot a limited number of weddings a year.. and that is by choice. It helps me keep my ideas fresh, and gives me time to pursue other kinds of photography as well.
3. Yes, I do work with a second shooter/assistant (If you haven't guessed, it's usually my wife who takes pretty awesome photos)
4. No, we don't use many flashes and strobes. Sure sometimes strobes are necessary, but not for every photo!!! I love natural light and being as unobtrusive as possible. Some people like my style of photography, others don't... that's why there are so many photographers out there, to fit everyone's tastes and requirements. Please, at the very least, take a look at my photos before you get in contact with me, to know what you're getting yourself into:)
5. Yes, we take pride in our work, and provide you with undivided attention on your wedding day. We also don't drink alcohol on your wedding day, and treat everyone with ooodles (<-- that means lots) of respect.
6. No, I don't advertise on wedding forums (see #2 above)
7. Yes, we (I, and usually my assistant) have a sense of humour. We hope you have one too!

Now that the formalities are out of the way, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, lots of everything that is good, but not too much because everything should be in moderation.

Kay and I shot this wedding on Saturday. It was my last one of the year, as later on today both of us are flying out on a 3 month trip that will take us to Poland, England and India. Thank you to everyone who hired me this year for photography. The Green Party of Canada held a campaign event at the Hockey Hall of Fame for supporters to welcome and meet party leader Elizabeth May. Although May was over 3 hours late, due to a delayed train, supporters managed to stick around to greet her when she eventually arrived.

The Antique and Classic Car Club of Canada, Rouge Valley Region

The Antique and Classic Car Club of Canada, Rouge Valley Region held their last show and shine car show of the year at Eglinton Square in Scarborough. Over 100 cars showed up to the parking lot, everything from Model T's to Thunderbirds. The club has a show and shine every Wednesday from the start of May until the end of September. The club was raising money for the Children's Wish foundation through the sale of raffle tickets and entrance fees.

Homewood/Maitland Safety Association

A member of the Homewood/Maitland Safety Association and members of a watchdog group, who monitor the actions of the Homewood/Maitland Safety Association, talk with transgendered sex worker Pheobe who works the Homewood strip. The Homewood/Maitland Safety Association is a group of local residents who are tired with the ongoing prostitution and drug problem on their streets, and are trying to do something about it by talking to the sex workers. The monitoring group has been showing up in the evenings to make sure the H.M.S.A. isn't acting out of line, as their have been reports of verbal and physical abuse acted out by H.M.S.A. members against the sex workers.
